eSIM FAQ

What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into modern smartphones that allows you to activate a mobile data plan without a physical SIM card. You simply scan a QR code to get connected — no store visit, no paperwork, no identity verification.
How do I activate my eSIM?
After your payment is confirmed, you'll receive a QR code. Go to your phone's Settings > Network > eSIM > Add eSIM, and scan the QR code. You'll be connected within 60 seconds.
Which devices are compatible?
Most modern smartphones support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and many more. Some carrier-locked phones may not support third-party eSIMs. Check your device settings under "Mobile Network" or "Cellular" for eSIM options.
Do I need to provide any personal information?
No. We require zero personal information — no name, no email, no phone number, no ID. You simply pay and receive your eSIM QR code. That's it.
My eSIM isn't connecting. What should I do?

Try these steps:

  1. Ensure your device supports eSIM
  2. Enable Data Roaming in your phone settings
  3. Toggle airplane mode on/off
  4. Restart your device
  5. Check that mobile data is enabled for the eSIM profile
  6. Ensure you're in a supported coverage area

If the issue persists, contact us via our Contact page.

How can I check my balance?
You can check your balance by dialing *187# from your eSIM line, or by visiting your personal order page using the link provided at the time of purchase. Bookmark your order page for easy access.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Yes. Hotspot / tethering is enabled on all plans at the same data rate. Share your connection with other devices without any additional charges.
Can I use the eSIM on multiple devices?
No. Each eSIM QR code can only be installed on one device. If you need to transfer it, you'll need to remove it from the current device first, then re-scan on the new device. Some carriers may not support transfers — in that case, a new eSIM purchase is required.
How do I top up my data?
Visit the Top Up section on the Buy eSIM page and enter your IMSI number + amount. Use the same QR code process to add the new data to your existing eSIM profile. Your number and connection remain the same.
What happens when my data balance runs out?
Your eSIM stays active — simply top up your balance and continue using it. There are no expiration dates on your account or funds. You can top up at any time without losing your number.
Which countries are covered?
We cover 140+ countries across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Coverage varies by plan tier — the Starter plan covers 50+ countries, while the Power User plan covers all 140+ countries.
Can I use the eSIM with a VPN?
Absolutely. We recommend using a no-log VPN alongside your anonymous eSIM for maximum privacy. The eSIM provides the data connection; the VPN encrypts all your traffic on top of that.
Do you keep any logs?
No. We operate on a zero-log policy. We do not track, store, or sell any usage data. Our infrastructure is designed with a zero-knowledge architecture — we cannot access your browsing or communication data.

Lain Phone FAQ

What is GrapheneOS and why should I trust it?
GrapheneOS is a privacy and security focused mobile operating system based on Android. It's developed as a non-profit open source project and is widely regarded as the most secure mobile OS available. It's audited by independent security researchers, used by journalists and activists worldwide, and trusted by privacy advocates including Edward Snowden.
Why a Pixel phone? Can I use my own phone?
GrapheneOS only runs on Google Pixel devices because Pixels offer the best hardware security features available — Titan M security chip, verified boot, and 7 years of security updates directly from Google. Other manufacturers don't provide the same level of bootloader unlocking and re-locking support that GrapheneOS requires for verified boot. Pixel is the only choice if you want both privacy AND hardware-backed security.
What's the difference between the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 Pro?

Both run identical GrapheneOS software with the same privacy guarantees. Hardware differences:

  • Pixel 9 ($499): 6.3" display, Tensor G4, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, dual camera
  • Pixel 10 Pro ($799): 6.7" LTPO display, Tensor G5, 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, triple camera with telephoto, longer battery life, under-display fingerprint

The Pixel 10 Pro also includes extras like a USB-C hardware security key and 1-year premium VPN subscription.

Can I install Google apps if I need them?
Yes. GrapheneOS offers sandboxed Google Play Services — you can install Google apps in an isolated user profile without giving them system-level access. Many users run a separate "work profile" with Google apps for things like banking or rideshare, while keeping their main profile completely Google-free. The sandboxing prevents Google from accessing data outside its profile.
Can I install apps from the Play Store?
You can install apps via several methods: F-Droid (open source app store), Aurora Store (anonymous Google Play frontend that doesn't require a Google account), Obtainium (installs apps directly from GitHub releases), or by sideloading APKs directly. If you really need the official Play Store, you can install sandboxed Google Play in a separate profile.
How does the eSIM activation work?
Every Lain Phone ships eSIM-ready with our anonymous eSIM service available out of the box. Simply scan the QR code we send you (or buy one from our eSIM page) and your phone is connected — no SIM card swapping, no carrier visit, no KYC. You can also use your existing SIM if you prefer.
What if I'm not technical? Can I still use it?
Absolutely. Every Lain Phone arrives fully configured and ready to use out of the box — there's no setup required. The interface is essentially the same as a stock Android phone, just without Google's tracking. We include a quick start guide and offer 30 days of free setup support via encrypted messaging for any questions.
Is it really untraceable? What's the threat model?

No phone is "untraceable" to a sufficiently motivated adversary. What we provide is:

  • Protection from corporate surveillance (Google, ad networks, app trackers)
  • Protection from carrier metadata collection (when paired with our anonymous eSIM)
  • Hardware-level security against malware and unauthorized access
  • Protection from "five eyes" mass data collection programs

For the full technical threat model, read our whitepaper.

How is the phone shipped?
Phones are shipped in discreet, unmarked packaging with no LainCollective branding on the outside. We ship worldwide via tracked courier. Tracking information is provided via your chosen encrypted channel (Session, Matrix, or PGP email). We do not retain shipping records after delivery confirmation.
Can I order from anywhere in the world?
Yes, we ship internationally. Some countries have import restrictions on certain electronics — it's the customer's responsibility to check local regulations. We are not liable for customs seizures. If you need help understanding your country's restrictions, contact us.
How do I pay? Do you accept cards?
We accept cryptocurrency only — Bitcoin, Monero, Lightning, USDT, and 50+ other coins via NowPayments. We don't accept credit cards or bank transfers because they leave a paper trail linking your identity to the purchase, which defeats the entire purpose. Monero is our recommended payment method for maximum privacy.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. All devices come with the manufacturer's hardware warranty (2 years). For software issues related to GrapheneOS or our pre-configured setup, we provide free setup support via encrypted messaging for 30 days after delivery. Hardware defects can be covered by Google's warranty service or returned to us for replacement.
